Meal and fiber values of oilseeds

I've been looking into the additional uses of various parts of the oilseeds under consideration, including various uses of the oil, feed value of the meal, and value of the rest of the plant. We will want to consider the cooking and other values for the oil, so for example flax might be useful in specialty finishes for the wood products industry in the area in addition to fuel value. The publication on meal value of camellia also included information on flax seed, and the link wasn't working in Joel Hunter's message so I've uploaded the file to the Penn State publications folder.

Sunflowers sprouting

The sunflowers planted June 21st have begun to sprout! All four oilseed crops are now in the ground and growing quickly.

Canola and flax in bloom

For the past two weeks, the canola and flax have been in full bloom at Mellinger Farm. Here are a few snapshots of the crops and their insect visitors.

Storms in Northeast Ohio

Last night's heavy rains took a toll on our plots. The canola, camelina and sunflowers are waterlogged and leaning, but generally strong. The flax was hardest hit, and is lodged in several places. Take a look at some of the photographs from this morning in the picture folder.
