Issue 2

As clearly described by Jack Fisher in the September/October issue of Our Ohio, the voice of the Ohio Farm Bureau, Issue 2 is intended to keep control of animal welfare in the hands of Ohio agribusiness and bureaucrates,  What the article does not state is that this control will be cemented by a Constitutional Amendment to the Ohio Constitution, putting all decisions regarding animal treatment into the hands of an appointed board.  This trend of putting decision making into the hands of "experts" is very dangerous for those of us who still value public debate.

Since I do not eat products from factory farms (there are 180 such permitted farms in Ohio), I worry that such a "standards" board would enact rules that would put my local farmers out of business.  It's tough enough for the folks who are trying to pasture their beef and chickens and raise small quantities without antibiotics and feedlots.  Do not be fooled by the promoters of this initiative.  The Farmers' Union, League of Women Voters, Humane Society, OEFFA, all of Ohio's major newspaper and a grassroots group www.ohioAct.org have issued reasons to oppose this legislation.  Please take the time to educate yourselves and your constitutents!

Thank you. I received a call about voting for issue 2. Is there organizing to let the public know what is wrong with this idea? Best, Michelle
